Iman, a talented Iranian wrestler, must flee his homeland. Together with his wife and children, he ends up in snow-covered Sweden, where immigrants and refugees are treated with increasing distrust. To make things worse Iman’s can’t free himself from difficult past and hidden secrets. Will his relationship survive in a foreign country on the edge of Europe?

Urodzony w 1982 roku w Iranie. Gdy był dzieckiem, wraz z rodzicami uciekł z ojczyzny do Szwecji, gdzie uzyskał status uchodźcy. W czasie studiów przeniósł się do Danii, gdzie ukończył Kopenhaską Szkołę Filmową. W czasie studiów zrealizował wiele filmów krótkometrażowych. Za jeden z nich, Mommy (2015), otrzymał nagrodę Duńskiej Akademii Filmowej. W 2017 roku zrealizował swój pełnometrażowy debiut pod tytułem The Charmer. Prezentowany na Berlinale Oponent to drugi pełnometrażowy film w jego dorobku.

Born in Iran in 1982. As a child, he fled his home country with his parents to Sweden, where he received refugee status. During his studies he moved to Denmark where he graduated from the Copenhagen Film School. During his studies he made many short films. One of them, 2015’s Mommy, earned him a Danish Film Academy Award. In 2017, he made his feature debut under the title The Charmer. Presented at the Berlinale, The Opponent is his second feature-length film.
