An involved, passionately shot picture about the complicated situation of a French suburb. A right-wing mayor wants to solve the housing problems of the local community. Habi, a young activist, contrasts his vision with the outlook of the residents, whose needs the mayor does not seem to understand. The director gives voice to “the least seen among the hardly seen,” and emphasizes the role of dialogue and communication. Ladj Ly refers to his own story – he lost his family apartment, from which he and his parents were evicted despite paying off the loan, without being offered any alternative.

Urodził się w Mali, od dzieciństwa mieszka w Montfermeil, gdzie rozgrywa się akcja jego pełnometrażowego debiutanckiego filmu „Nędznicy” (2019) i którego ujęcia dokumentował od siedemnastego roku życia. Film został zaprezentowany po raz pierwszy w konkursie głównym w Cannes i otrzymał Nagrodę Jury. Był też nominowany do Oscara i Złotego Globu. Jako część aktorów zatrudnił lokalnych mieszkańców, których obecność podbija autentyczny, surowy charakter opowieści. „Kolonia nr 5” jest drugim filmem Ly.

Born in Mali, he has lived in Montfermeil since childhood, where his feature-length debut film “Les Miserables” (2019) is set and which he has been documenting since he was seventeen. The film was presented for the first time in the main competition at Cannes and won the Jury Prize. It was also nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe. He hired local residents as some of the actors, whose presence conquers the authentic, raw character of the story. “Bâtiment 5” is Ly’s second film.
