W położonej wysoko w górach, odciętej od świata tureckiej wiosce powrót wygnanego rodu Bezarich na nowo rozpala dawny konflikt o ziemię. Podczas ich nieobecności pola uprawiali Hazeranowie – społeczność o służebnym rodowodzie, która przez lata odpierała najazdy bandytów, pracowała na tej ziemi, nawadniała ją i obsiewała. Teraz granice własności, pamięci i przynależności zaczynają się niebezpiecznie zacierać. W centrum opowieści stoi Mesut, starszy brat lokalnego przywódcy, człowiek przeżarty urazą i coraz silniej owładnięty religijną gorączką. Dręczony wizjami, które uznaje za boskie znaki, zaczyna widzieć w sobie proroka i zbawcę. Wkrótce skupi wokół siebie grupę mężczyzn ubierających agresję i uprzedzenia w język wspólnoty, honoru i obrony tradycji. W filmie Alpera zbawienie wydaje się na wyciągnięcie ręki, ale droga do niego wiedzie przez ofiarę, z której nie wszyscy wyjdą cało.

Alper’s latest film, awarded the Silver Bear (Grand Jury Prize) at the Berlinale, is a true masterpiece. Set in a remote Turkish village high in the mountains, the return of the exiled Bezari clan reignites an old land dispute. During their absence, the fields were cultivated by the Hazerans—a community of servant lineage who over the years repelled bandit raids, worked the land, irrigated it, and sowed its crops. Now, the boundaries of ownership, memory, and belonging begin to blur dangerously. At the center of the story stands Mesut, the older brother of the local leader, a man consumed by resentment and increasingly gripped by religious fervor. Tormented by visions he considers divine signs, he begins to see himself as a prophet and savior. Soon, he gathers around him a group of men who cloak their aggression and prejudice in the language of community, honor, and the defense of tradition. In Alper’s film, salvation seems within reach, but the path leading to it requires a sacrifice that not everyone will survive intact.

Reżyser i scenarzysta, jeden z czołowych twórców współczesnego kina tureckiego. Absolwent ekonomii i historii na Uniwersytecie Boğaziçi, autor tekstów poświęconych kinu, wykładowca Uniwersytetu Technicznego w Stambule. Jego filmy, wyraziste metafory opresyjnego systemu politycznego w Turcji, były nagradzane m.in. na festiwalach w Berlinie, Wenecji i Karlowych Warach. Wśród swoich mistrzów wymienia Michaela Hanekego, Luchina Viscontiego i Rainera Wernera Fassbindera.

A graduate in economics and history from Boğaziçi University, he is an author of film essays and a lecturer at Istanbul Technical University. His films—striking metaphors for the oppressive political system in Turkey—have received awards at festivals in Berlin, Venice, and Karlovy Vary, among others.
