Set in contemporary Paris, Radu Jude’s Diary of a Chambermaid is a variation on Octave Mirbeau’s decadent novel. In Jude’s adaptation, Gianina, a Romanian migrant living with her employers, runs the household of a wealthy, pseudo-intellectual couple. Her fate mirrors that of Célestine, the novel’s protagonist. In the evenings, at her hosts’ request, Gianina rehearses for an amateur staging of Diary of a Chambermaid. In her free time, she talks to her daughter, who lives with her grandmother and patiently endures the absence of her mother supporting the family from abroad. Everything goes according to Gianina’s plan—until… The latest film from the auteur cinema favorite, and his most provocative work to date, turns out to be a surprisingly tender socio-economic satire. The protagonist presents herself as an apolitical, obedient, and almost invisible member of the servant class, but it is precisely through her that the film demonstrates how, more than a century later, the mechanism of exploitation continues to run seamlessly.

Jeszcze w trakcie studiów w Bukareszcie pracował jako asystent reżysera na planie wielu filmów (m.in. Amen Costy-Gavrasa). W 2006 roku zrealizował Lampę z kapturkiem, która przeszła do historii jako najczęściej nagradzany rumuński film krótkometrażowy. W 2009 roku nakręcił swój pełnometrażowy debiut fabularny Najszczęśliwsza dziewczyna na świecie. Największy sukces w dotychczasowej karierze odniósł za sprawą filmu Niefortunny numerek lub szalone porno (2021), który przyniósł mu Złotego Niedźwiedzia w Berlinie.

A Romanian director and screenwriter born in 1977 in Bucharest. One of the most intriguing filmmakers in contemporary cinema, he daringly combines erudition, innovation, and a mischievous sense of humor. While still studying in Bucharest, he worked as an assistant director on numerous film sets (including Costa-Gavras’s Amen.). In 2006, he made The Tube with a Hat, which went down in history as the most awarded Romanian short film. In 2009, he directed his feature debut, The Happiest Girl in the World. His greatest success to date came with Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (2021), which earned him the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
