Based on the true, shocking story of Olfa Hamrouni and her children. A surprising combination of fiction, documentary, and police reconstruction, with a political revolution in the background. This unique form allows one of the most acclaimed directors of contemporary cinema (this is her second Oscar nomination), Kaouther Ben Hani, to dive deep into a subject that has been trivialized by the media. The protagonist is Olfa (herself, but sometimes replaced on screen by an actress), a mother of four daughters. The two youngest appear in the film, the disappearance of the two oldest (played by actresses) is the subject of a passionate “investigation” that leads all the way to one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations in the world – the so-called Islamic State. Ben Hania traces the power of problematic intergenerational female transmission, brings to light commonly accepted domestic and systemic violence, and punctuates the way in which seemingly distant political transformations shape the fate of individuals. Moving, at times confrontational, certainly provocative and wildly courageous, “Four Daughters” is also a statement of faith in the strength, perseverance and solidarity of women. Hundreds of kilometers separate us from Tunisia, but Ben Hani’s film resonates surprisingly currently also in Poland.

Tunezyjska reżyserka i scenarzystka. Studiowała film w Tunezji, a następnie w Paryżu (w szkole La Fémis i na Sorbonie). W 2005 roku wyreżyserowała swój pierwszy krótki metraż “Brèche”, w 2013 – pierwszy film fabularny “The Blade of Tunis”, a trzy lata później dokument “Zaineb Hates the Snow”. Jest autorką filmów nagradzanych na międzynarodowych festiwalach. Dramat “Piękna i bestie” był pokazywany w Cannes (Un Certain Regard) w 2017 roku, a “Człowiek, który sprzedał swoją skórę” w Wenecji (sekcja Orizzonti) w roku 2020, gdzie otrzymał nagrodę dla najlepszego aktora. Rok później został też nominowany do Oscara w kategorii najlepszy film międzynarodowy.

The drama “Beauty and the Beasts” was screened at Cannes (Un Certain Regard) in 2017, and “The Man Who Sold His Skin” at Venice (Orizzonti section) in 2020, where it won the Best Actor award. A year later, it was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Film.
