It begins with the titular incident. A car breakdown on their way home forces a married couple with a young daughter to pull into a roadside repair shop. There, they encounter two mechanics, one of whom offers to help. The other is Vahid, who watches everything from a distance.

Urodził się w 1960 roku w Mianeh w Iranie. Po studiach na Uniwersytecie Telewizji i Radia w Iranie tworzył krótkie metraże, dokumenty i filmy telewizyjne. Był asystentem Abbasa Kiarostamiego przy filmie „Pod oliwkami” (1994). W 1995 roku zadebiutował „Białym balonikiem” zrealizowanym we współpracy z Kiarostamim. Kolejny film Panahiego „Lustro” (1997) triumfował na festiwalu w Locarno, a „Krąg” z 2000 roku zdobył weneckiego Złotego Lwa. Następne filmy Irańczyka doceniane były także w Cannes i Berlinie. W 2009 roku został aresztowany za udział w antyreżimowych demonstracjach, a wkrótce nałożono na niego dwudziestoletni zakaz kręcenia filmów. Pomimo tego Panahi dalej tworzył, a jego kolejne dzieła podbijały światowe festiwale. „Taxi-Teheran” zdobył Złotego Niedźwiedzia w Berlinie, a „Trzy twarze” (2013) otrzymały nagrodę za scenariusz w Cannes. W 2025 roku za film „To był zwykły przypadek” dostał w Cannes Złotą Palmę, co czyni go jednym z kilku twórców w historii kina, którym udało się zdobyć najwyższe laury trzech najważniejszych światowych festiwali.

He was born in 1960 in Mianeh, Iran. After studying at the University of Television and Radio in Iran, he made short films, documentaries, and television films. He was Abbas Kiarostami’s assistant on the film Under the Olive Trees (1994). In 1995, he made his debut with The White Balloon, produced in collaboration with Kiarostami. Panahi’s next film, The Mirror (1997), triumphed at the Locarno Film Festival, and The Circle (2000) won the Golden Lion in Venice. The Iranian director’s subsequent films were also recognized at Cannes and Berlin. In 2009, he was arrested for participating in anti-regime demonstrations and was soon banned from making films for 20 years. Despite this, Panahi continued to create, and his subsequent works conquered international festivals. Taxi won the Golden Bear in Berlin, and Three Faces (2013) received the award for best screenplay at Cannes. In 2025, he won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for his film “It Was a Simple Accident,” making him one of the few filmmakers in cinema history to have won the top prizes at the three most important film festivals in the world.
