Akcja filmu rozgrywa się w 1937 roku w Związku Radzieckim, w szczytowym okresie stalinowskich czystek. To czas, kiedy tysiące listów od więźniów fałszywie oskarżonych przez reżim zostaje spalonych w jednej z pustych cel. Wbrew wszelkim przeciwnościom jeden z nich dociera do młodego, pełnego ideałów i zaczynającego pracę w roli lokalnego prokuratora Aleksandra Korniejewa.   

Mężczyzna robi wszystko, co w jego mocy, by spotkać się z więźniem, ofiarą agentów NKWD. Młody prokurator zaczyna zdawać sobie sprawę, że trafił do miejsca, gdzie nie chodzi wcale o prawdę i sprawiedliwość. Jest jednak na tyle zdeterminowany, że ze sprawą, którą się zajmuje, trafia do biura prokuratora generalnego w Moskwie. Korniejew zmuszony zostaje jednak do skonfrontowania się z absurdami i okrucieństwem reżimu, odkrywając, że jego idealizm na niewiele może się zdać wobec rozbudowanej totalitarnej machiny.

The film is set in 1937 in the Soviet Union, at the height of Stalin’s purges. It is a time when thousands of letters from prisoners falsely accused by the regime are burned in one of the empty cells. Against all odds, one of them reaches a young, idealistic Alexander Korneev, who is just starting work as a local prosecutor.

The man does everything in his power to meet with the prisoner, a victim of the NKVD agents. The young prosecutor begins to realize that he has ended up in a place where truth and justice are not important. However, he is determined enough that the case he is working on ends up in the office of the prosecutor general in Moscow. Korneyev is forced to confront the absurdities and cruelty of the regime, discovering that his idealism is of little use in the face of an elaborate totalitarian machine.

Urodził się w 1964 roku w Baranowiczach. Ukraiński reżyser, scenarzysta i producent filmów zarówno dokumentalnych, jak i fabularnych. Studiował matematykę w Kijowie, a następnie reżyserię w moskiewskim WGIK. Jego debiutancki dokument „Dzisiaj zbudujemy dom” (1996) został nagrodzony Brązowym Smokiem na Krakowskim Festiwalu Filmowym. W późniejszych latach był tam wielokrotnie nagradzany, a w 2018 roku odebrał Smoka Smoków za wybitny wkład w rozwój światowego filmu dokumentalnego. Jego fabularnym debiutem stał się film „Szczęście ty moje” (2010), który zdobył uznanie w Cannes. Tam zresztą nagrodzone zostały jego kolejne filmy: „We mgle” (2012), „Donbas” (2018), „Babi Jar. Konteksty” (2021) oraz „Dwóch prokuratorów” (2025).

He was born in 1964 in Baranovichi. He is a Ukrainian director, screenwriter, and producer of both documentary and feature films. He studied mathematics in Kiev and then directing at the Moscow Film Institute (VGIK). His debut documentary, Today We Will Build a House (1996), won the Bronze Dragon award at the Krakow Film Festival. In later years, he received numerous awards there, and in 2018 he received the Dragon of Dragons for his outstanding contribution to the development of world documentary film. His feature debut was the film My Happiness (2010), which won acclaim at Cannes. His subsequent films were also awarded there: In the Fog (2012), Donbas (2018), Babi Yar. Contexts (2021), and Two Prosecutors (2025).
